What is the difference between LNG, CNG and LPG?
LNG, CNG and LPG are quite different substances.
The following table gives a general outline of the main features of these.
1) LPG
2) CNG
3) LNG
name
1) Liquefied Petroleum Gas
2)Compressed Natural Gas
3)Liquefied Natural Gas
constituents
1) butane + propane
2) mostly methane
3) mostly methane
storage phase and pressure
1) liquid under pressure
2) gas at high pressure
3) liquid not pressurised(a)
storage temperature
1) room temperature
2) room temperature(b)
3) -160°C
vapour density at air temperature
1) vapour heavier than air
2) vapour lighter than air
3) vapour lighter than air(c)
where found
1) widely distributed4
2) bulk shipments,motor vehicles
3) bulk shipments
end uses
1) fuel, refrigerant, propellant
2) fuel
3) fuel
Notes
(a). LNG tanks are designed to operate at a slight positive pressure.
(b). CNG is sometimes stored at cool temperatures, typically down to around -30°C.
(c). Methane is lighter than air at temperatures above about -100°C.4. LPG is widely used in domestic and industrial applications. LPG is transported by road tanker, and by rail, ship and pipeline. Domestic examples include bottles used on a BBQ or caravan.
